Garmin announces Edge 820 and Edge Explore 820

New 8-series Edge computers.

Garmin just released the statement announcing the latest in their Edge series, the Edge 820 and Edge Explore 820. They look a whole lot like the Edge 520, to be honest, they look exactly the same. Even the dimensions are identical. At first glance, the main difference is an added touch screen and some more mapping features.

GroupTrack

A nice feature I recently saw in the Wahoo ELMNT as well, is to see where your friends are hanging out. When other users have an 820 too, you can see their location on the map. This is a nice feature if somebody is a bad climber or never waits for the group. You can just pull up the map and see where they’re hanging out.

Key features

The devices are a bit different, so the Edge 820 has all the features listed here and also the features listed below. So these key features are for both the Edge 820 and Edge Explore 820. Besides this list the devices have several smaller features, but these are the most out standing.

  • Touch screen
  • GroupTrack
  • Bike navigation (on the go)
  • Connect IQ
  • Bike maps
  • GPS & GLONASS
  • VIRB Control
  • Add Maps

Differences with the Explore

Explore is to be the “smaller brother”. With very similar features, but lacking the following:

  • no WiFi
  • no vector support (or other ANT+ power meter for that matter)
  • one bike profile
  • no advanced workouts
  • no virtual partner
  • no interval training
  • No VO2/max calculation
  • turbo profile (for use with compatible Turbo trainer)
  • no Di2 support

Just a note about the “links to buy” in this article, as they are sponsored. I do look for the lowest price I can find at the time of writing in a handful of stores, but by using the links I earn from qualifying purchases made through these links.

  1. it’s a funny one. I was underwhelmed. but I’d buy one. Wierd

    • Yeah, my reaction was quite similar to this: OH Goody, new Garmin stuff!! … ehm.. what’s new? But that being said, it’s a nice device. Cool features. I hope the GroupTrack is expanded to more devices.
